The Ojo Pelao Workshop is an inspiring documentary photography program based in Venezuela, dedicated to equipping Venezuelan photographers with the professional skills needed to thrive in a challenging industry. Many photographers in Venezuela face a significant gap in formal training and resources, as local media outlets are limited and often provide little or no compensation. Ojo Pelao addresses this gap, offering essential tools and education that empower participants to pursue a sustainable career in documentary photography.
A central aim of the workshop is to promote gender equality by addressing the field’s underrepresentation of women. This edition delves into themes of border life, migration, and peacebuilding through the exploration of two key Venezuelan regions: Caracas and Táchira. Caracas, the heart of Venezuela’s socioeconomic struggles, presents profound themes of displacement and resilience, while Táchira, at the border with Colombia, serves as a vibrant setting to document migration firsthand.
The Ojo Pelao Workshop offers an impactful alternative to the often dehumanized narratives surrounding migration, fostering respect and dignity in storytelling. Through a series of intensive classes, participants learn how to build purpose into their work, creating impactful and respectful narratives that spark awareness and understanding. A critical element of the program is also building a supportive network among photographers—fostering constructive critique, camaraderie, respect, and healthy competition. The connection between Caracas and Táchira is celebrated in the final exhibition, symbolizing the power of photography to bridge divides and deepen understanding.
The Ojo Pelao Workshop contributes to an informed and empathetic public dialogue on migration and border issues by empowering photographers to document human stories of migration and life at the border. Despite the obstacles in Venezuela, this workshop promotes democratic, ethical photojournalism and empowers participants to become agents of positive change, champions for human rights, and advocates for peace.
